She looked at the rocky patch with new eyes. “Then . . . you think it rose from beneath?”

“Your mother said the mountains were still alive.”

She made no comment to that. She had found it, to her surprise, easier than she’d expected to keep her word about maintaining her calm with her mother. Perhaps because she had given it to Brander, and she never wished to let him down. He might irritate her, tease her, and fill her with longings for things she couldn’t yet name, but he had ever and always been there for her.

She watched Brander as he studied the area. So familiar as he stood there with that easy grace, the dark silk of his hair stirring slightly in the faint swirl of the mist. So familiar, that look of utter concentration, speaking of the agile mind behind those vivid Kalon eyes.

That he was so familiar and yet was still able to surprise her was something she had come to expect. And she was beginning to realize that was a mistake, that something so wonderful should not be taken for granted. That nothing should be taken for granted anymore. Because they truly could lose it all at any moment.

Drake’s comment and Kye’s response played through her mind.

I will be packing what cannot be left behind.

The only thing in that category for me is you.

She tried to imagine a life without Brander in it. It was impossible. The coming of the Coalition had upended life on Ziem, but never again seeing those eyes, never again hearing his laugh, or watching him as his incredible brain worked out some intricate problem, would be a life without purpose, without reason. She would fight on, for Ziem, but without Brander, she would just as soon die in the process.

“Eirlys?”

She had not even heard Brander approach, and his quiet inquiry told her much about what must be showing in her face.

“Promise me you will ever take care,” she said urgently.

He looked startled. But then, slowly, he reached out and cupped her cheek with his hand. “If you will do the same. I could not do without you, Eirlys Davorin.”

In that moment, she wished they were alone, so she could pour out what had been bottled up inside her for so long. But they were not. They had a task to do, and it was a crucial one.

They backtracked to where she had last noted a pair of white-tails scampering up the ridge. The graceful animals left no trace of broken branches or trod-upon leaves, but there were enough of them here to have worn faint trails in the undergrowth. After a moment’s study, she found one, and they started along it. It was steep, and in a couple of places, she envied the white-tails their four strong legs.
